Deter Crime with Increased Vigilance During the Summer

Crime Prevention

As temperatures rise, crime rates tend to increase as well. Increased crime rates are due to a number of factors including, but not limited to, an increase in mischief amongst children on summer break, as well as an increase in alcohol use.  Household larceny, motor vehicle theft, and assault are some of the most common crimes that increase during warmer months, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Take the following steps to help keep you, your family, your property, and your community safe this summer:

  • Do not leave car windows down or unattended.
  • Do not leave first-floor home windows open overnight.
  • Do not leave ladders and tools outside that could help provide easy access to your home.
  • If you will be away on vacation, have a friend remove mail and mow your lawn so the home does not appear vacant.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings.  Do not hesitate to contact the Eaton Police Division if you suspect criminal activity.
  • Remember: If you See Something...Say Something.  Report all suspicious activity to the police division even if you aren't sure a crime has been committed.  It gives us the opportunity to investigate, deter, and possibly prevent a crime from occurring.
